About Our Secure Age Checks

Age Checks provide a quick and secure way for users to unlock chat on Roblox. This built-in protection helps limit interactions to users who are in a similar age group, enabling you to feel more confident about who your children are chatting with.

No system is foolproof, so we recommend pairing Age Checks with your Parental Controls and using our Parent Resources to talk often with your child about how to stay safe online.

What age checks unlock

By completing the age check process, users can connect with peers and trusted friends.

Chat access

Unlocks chat features. Default settings can be found here

Trusted friends

Through trusted friends, age checked users can chat with people they know and trust. This includes parents and siblings.

Social media links (upcoming)

Only age-checked users who are 13+ years old can view and share social media links on a game’s page, game’s community or a user’s profile. Additionally on user’s profiles, they can only view social links from people in their own age group and similar age groups.

Studio Team Create (upcoming)

Will allow age-checked users to co-create experiences with other users of similar ages and their trusted friends using Team Create, Roblox Studio’s real-time collaboration feature (starting early 2026).

How to complete an age check on Roblox

The fastest way to complete an age check is to use our secure Facial Age Estimation technology. You can also use ID verification with a government-issued ID or verify your child's age using parental controls. If you want to make an update to the result of Facial Age Estimation, you can use ID verification or parental controls to do so.

Facial Age Estimation is the fastest way to complete an age check. It has been tested for accuracy by the Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS) in the UK and scans for common fraud attempts.

To use this technology for your own account, start by logging in on your device. Make sure the device you choose has a working camera.

  1. Navigate to Settings
    1. On desktop: Select the gear icon located at the top right.
    2. On mobile: Select More (...) located at the bottom right, and select Settings (gear icon).
  2. Click on Account info
  3. Click on “Age Group”
  4. Click the “Continue with selfie” button to start the Facial Age Estimation process.
  5. Follow the prompts on your screen to complete the age check.

If you believe your age was incorrectly estimated, go to Settings, then click the Account info tab, and select Verify My Age.

Be sure you have a government-issued ID on hand.

Before helping your child complete an age check, make sure you’ve created an account and have linked it to theirs. This will be required if you have to verify their age. Learn more here.

We also recommend you complete Facial Age Estimation yourself first. This will help you understand the process, guide your child when it’s their turn, and avoid mistakenly age checking on their behalf. (See instructions for completing Facial Age Estimation for your account above).

To use this technology for your child’s account, start by having them log into their account on their device or your own.

  1. Help them navigate to Settings
    1. On desktop: Select the gear icon located at the top right.
    2. On mobile: Select More (...) located at the bottom right, and select Settings (gear icon).
  2. Have them click on Account info
  3. Have them click “Age Group”
Note: Pause before you take the next step. Make sure your child is in front of the phone camera, not you. You can still instruct them, but remain out of the device’s camera range.
  4. Have your child click the “Continue with selfie” button to start the Facial Age Estimation process.

Help them follow the steps to complete the age check.

If you believe your child’s age was incorrectly estimated, go to Settings in their account, then click the Account info tab, and select Verify My Age.

Despite rigorous testing and evaluations, there may be instances of incorrect age estimation.

If the technology has incorrectly estimated your or your child’s age to under 13, you can use your linked parent account to update your child’s birthday.

  1. Log into your linked parent account
  2. Navigate to Settings > Parental Controls
  3. Click the pencil icon next to your child’s birthdate.

Note: You can only update your child’s age once.

If your child is over the age of 13, they can also update their age using ID verification.

We understand that some users or parents may prefer an alternative to Facial Age Estimation.

You can also complete an age check through our ID verification process. This process is available to users who are 13 years or older. The user must have a government-issued photo ID. This can be a driver’s license, passport, residency card, or any other government-issued identification document with your picture on it.

  1. Log into your account.
  2. Go to Settings
    1. On desktop: Select the gear icon located at the top right then click on Settings in the dropdown.
    2. On mobile: Select More (...) located at the bottom right. Navigate to Settings (gear icon).
  3. Click on the Account Info tab
  4. Underneath your birthday, click the Continue button from the “Use an ID to verify your birthday” prompt.
  5. Follow the steps in the pop-up that appears.
  6. Allow your device to use its camera to complete the process.
  7. Scan your ID document.
  8. You will be asked to get ready for the camera. This age estimation will be used to verify that you are the same person as the one on your photo ID.
  9. Navigate back to your original Roblox session. You will see real-time status updates there. Once verification is complete, you will see a pass or failed result. This can take a few minutes.

Facial Age Estimation FAQs

Age checks are entirely optional, and it is only necessary to complete this process if you want to access the features mentioned above.

We want to reiterate that we designed the Facial Age Estimation and ID verification processes to protect your privacy and personal information. Roblox does not and will not sell users’ image data.

We respect the laws in every country and region where we operate. In line with data protection regulations, we provide you with the rights to access, edit, and delete your personal data. Our Privacy Policy and Facial Media Capture Privacy Notice clearly outline the steps we take to protect your personal data, including how such data is retained and used.

Once age-checked, you are assigned to an age group. You can only chat with peers of a similar age or known users outside your age groups (family members, school friends, etc.) who have been added as trusted friends

For example:

  • Elisa (estimated age 12): Elisa has access to chat with users aged 15 or younger in Experience chat. All users 16 or older are prevented from initiating or engaging in chat with her.
  • Marcus (estimated age 18): Marcus has access to chat with users aged 16 or older and could add a younger sibling as a Trusted Connection, as long as they are 13 or older. Marcus can also add his younger sibling (8 years old) through trusted friends with his parent’s verified consent.

You have two main methods to correct an incorrect age assignment:

  1. ID-Verify: If you are 13+, you can always ID-verify to correct your age.
  2. Parents with linked parent accounts can correct their child’s age following an age check if they believe the assigned age group is incorrect. Verified linked parent accounts can then modify their child’s birthday within Parental Controls.
Yes, you can. Users 13+ years of age who possess a valid government ID can choose to verify their age using ID Verification instead.  Please note that you will be asked to capture a selfie to verify that you are the same person as the one on your photo ID.
If you start the flow on a device without a camera, you can use a QR code to seamlessly transfer the Age Estimation process to a mobile device with camera access.

Our Persona is a leading provider in identity solutions and use AI technology for age estimation and verification to access chat features on Roblox.

Persona’s advanced AI models are trained on ethically sourced data points and continuously evaluated to estimate age reliably while minimizing demographic bias. Based on separate evaluations by NIST and the Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS), Persona’s technology has no material bias across age or sex.

While Facial Age Estimation establishes the strictest defaults for chat, parents can adjust other limits for their kids based on what they feel is best for their family.
