Safety FAQ
We’ve provided answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about how Roblox works and how you can help support your child’s experience on the platform.
General
Explore Roblox for yourself: Create an account so that you can learn more about Roblox and play alongside your child.
Engage with parental controls: Link your Roblox account to your child’s account, so that you can help manage their experience on the platform.
Have a conversation with your child about internet safety: Encourage your child to be mindful about who they talk to, what information they share, and the risks of moving to other platforms.
Unlike other platforms, Roblox acknowledges that there are users under 13 on the platform and builds safety features with them in mind. That’s why our policies are stricter than many other platforms.
We require users to complete an age check before they can chat with other users on Roblox, and we use chat filters designed to block inappropriate language, personally identifiable information (such as email addresses and phone numbers), and solicitations to move conversations off Roblox onto other platforms.
Users can only chat with users in their age group, similar age groups, and trusted friends. Users 13+ can chat more freely with trusted friends, and all conversations are monitored for child endangerment.
We also acknowledge that no system is perfect, so we encourage parents to talk to their children about online safety. In particular, it’s important to be mindful of moving communications to other websites or apps, which violates our strict policies and relinquishes the protections that exist on Roblox. Roblox has features in place to help users maintain their privacy. When users move to a different platform, they might reveal more personal information either intentionally or inadvertently, especially if their other profiles include real names and contact information. Many other platforms allow user-to-user sharing of images, which Roblox does not. Also, if a conversation started on Roblox but wrongdoing happens elsewhere, it can be more challenging for Roblox and law enforcement to investigate and take swift action. We recommend learning about the other websites and apps your child uses and for what purpose, as well as how their safety and reporting features work.
Chat on Roblox
Experience Chat is messaging between users who are playing the same game. Experience Chat is filtered for any policy-violating content, including the sharing of personal information and harassment.
All chat requires users to be age checked and is only available with users in similar age groups and trusted friends.
Direct Chat is messaging between two users who are playing the same game. Direct Chat is filtered for any policy-violating content, including the sharing of personal information and harassment.
All chat requires users to be age checked and is only available with users in similar age groups and trusted friends.
With our Chat tab, users can start conversations with friends and trusted friends at any time. This way, users can decide what game they want to play together, jump in and play, and then talk about the game when they’re done, all in the same place.
All chat is restricted based on users’ ages and requires users to be age checked. If available in your account, Chat is only available with users in similar age groups and trusted friends.
Voice Chat is only available in some regions.
In games, Voice Chat functions like an “open mic”, allowing users to talk with all other age-appropriate users and trusted friends who are playing in the same server.
In some regions, users can also use voice calling to chat with their friends and trusted friends. For users under 18 years of age, voice calling is only available with trusted friends.
All chat requires users to be age checked and is only available with users in similar age groups or trusted friends.
Chat is only available in some regions. If chat is available in your region, your child must complete an age check to access it. If your child is under 9 years old, chat is turned off in their Roblox Kids account.
Chat settings change as your child ages, but all chat is restricted to users of similar ages and trusted friends. If chat is turned on in your child’s account, they can chat with users of the following ages:
- 5-8 year olds can chat with other users under the age of 13 years old.
- 9-12 year olds can chat with other users under the age of 16.
- 13-15 year olds can chat with users ages 9-17.
- 16-17 year olds can chat with users ages 13-20.
- 18-20 year olds can chat with users ages 16+
- 21+ year olds can only chat with users ages 18+.
Unlike other platforms, the default setting for chatting on Roblox is ‘filtered’. These filters are designed to block the sharing of inappropriate content (such as discriminatory speech, bullying, extremism, violence, and sexual content), personally identifiable information, links, images, and videos.
We also use chat rephrasing to reduce the use of profanity (which violates our policies) while still enabling the conversation to flow.
We understand that some users, especially older users, may want to chat with each other more freely. If a user is 13+ years old, they can chat without filters, but only with trusted friends in direct Party Chat messages. Though these conversations are unfiltered, they are still proactively monitored for child endangerment
We know how fun it can be to communicate and collaborate together as a family on Roblox. Parents who want to chat with their child can do so by becoming a trusted friend.
As a parent, all you have to do to become a trusted friend is:
- Complete an age check
- Have your child complete an age check
- Create a parent account by creating your own account and linking it to your child’s
- Find step-by-step instructions here
- Add your child as a friend on Roblox
After these steps are completed, you’ll automatically be upgraded to a trusted friend. As a trusted friend, you can chat with your child immediately while playing as a family on Roblox.
Content on Roblox

May contain repeated mild violence, light unrealistic blood, mild crude humor, and/or repeated mild fear.Moderate

We allow Restricted content only for users who are 18+ age-verified.You can use the content maturity setting in parental controls to restrict your child’s access to content based on what makes sense for your family.
You can also choose to Allow your child to join or Block games from your child's Roblox Kids or Select account.
Roblox Kids & Select accounts
Roblox Kids and Select accounts are new accounts designed for our youngest users. In most regions , children who are age checked at 5-8 will be automatically placed into a Roblox Kids account. These accounts have a distinct blue background, making it easy for parents to identify that their child is playing in a Roblox Kids account.
Roblox Kids accounts have our strictest settings in place. Chat is off by default and games are only playable if they have a Minimal or Mild rating.
In most regions, children age checked 9-15 will automatically be placed into a Roblox Select account. These accounts have stricter guardrails in place than standard Roblox accounts, but game ratings are available up to Moderate. Direct Chat remains off by default, but Experience Chat and Party Chat with trusted friends become available as your child ages.
Parental controls remain in these accounts for users through age 12 and some, including the ability to manage Direct Chat settings, block games, and allow games, are available to parents of all users in Roblox Select accounts (through age 15).
Yes, your child will have to complete an age check to be automatically placed into a Roblox Kids or Select account. Our age-based approach to safety is tied directly to ensuring the most appropriate games and chat settings are in place based on a users’ age. That said, we do not require age checks to play Roblox. If a user does not complete an age check, they will not have access to chat features, and will lose access to games with higher maturity ratings.
Age checks can be completed a couple of different ways.
- Facial Age Estimation - this is the fastest and easiest way for your child to complete an age check. Our trusted vendor, Persona, uses a live estimation process to reduce instances of scams or fakes. Photos and videos are deleted from all systems after the age check process.
- ID Verification - if your child is old enough to have an ID, they can use this to verify their age.
To be playable in Roblox Kids and Select accounts, games must meet our maturity rating requirements and pass our 3-step selection process. This includes creator identity verification and moderation of real gameplay with users over 16 years old
Roblox Kids users will only be able to play games with our lowest maturity ratings (Minimal, Mild). Games rated up to Moderate may show up in their searches on the platform, but will not be playable on their account.
Roblox Select users will be able to play and search games with maturity ratings up to Moderate.
If a game is shared directly with any user, its detail page will be visible regardless of its content maturity rating. However, games that do not meet the requirements of Roblox Kids or Roblox Select will not be playable for users in these accounts. Games that are rated Restricted will not be playable for users under 18.
Our content maturity labels were designed to help surface more age-appropriate games and are grounded in child development research and informed by industry standards. That said, we know that not every child or family is the same and that standards may differ regionally.
This is why we allow parents to adjust their child’s content maturity settings using parental controls.
Your parental controls will expand with Roblox Kids and Select accounts. You’ll have visibility into screentime, spending, friends, and trusted friends in both accounts. You’ll still be able to manage all of these settings for your child through the age of 12.
You’ll also be able to block or allow games and turn off Direct Chat in both of these accounts.
Yes, your children can still play together even if they have different accounts. If either sibling does not have access to a game that they’d like to play together, they can request you to add it to their allowed games list using parental controls.
Siblings can chat together if they’re of similar ages or if they are trusted friends.
Our built-in restrictions, 3-step review process, and ongoing moderation processes are designed to catch as many instances of violative or inappropriate content as possible. However, we acknowledge that some content may slip through. Roblox does not allow content or behavior that violates our Community Standards.
Users can report inappropriate content or behavior using reporting tools. This sends a report directly to Roblox, where our systems review the report and take appropriate action if a policy violation is found.
Users also have the ability to block other users, and parents can block specific games or users using parental controls.
Spending on Roblox
Screen-Time Limits and Digital Well-Being
Roblox encourages you to regularly talk to your child about creating a healthy relationship with media and technology and how to be responsible online. Discussions about screen time and the types of activities children engage in are important, as are setting boundaries around your children's use of Roblox and all the platforms they use. It’s also valuable to understand who your child is spending time with, both on and off the platform. Global experts have found that children are more likely to adhere to boundaries if families set boundaries together.
Roblox prioritizes helping children access support for issues affecting them, even if it’s not directly Roblox- or online-related. In partnership with Throughline, Roblox provides access to a portal with links to a global network of helplines and support services, which focus on a broad range of topics.
Reporting
Trusted Friends
We designed trusted friends for other known Roblox users, like family members or school friends.
Users can chat with trusted friends, regardless of the age group they fall in. This means parents and siblings can chat with their younger family members.
- Example: Marcus (estimated age 18) can add his younger sibling (8 years old) as a trusted friend (with his parent’s consent) and chat while playing their favorite game.
Users who are 13+ years old can chat without filters in direct messages with trusted friends. These chats are still proactively monitored for child exploitation.
Trusted friends can also collaborate together on Roblox Studio to create content and games together.
The concept of allowing users to play and create with their family and inner circle is not new.
Previously, we referred to these known users as “trusted connections.” We want to use a term that feels more natural, and is used in everyday life. That’s why we’re re-introducing these known users as trusted friends.
We’re also making these connections available to users under 13 with parental consent. This allows parents to communicate and collaborate with their younger children online.
Playing and creating with your family, school friends, and others in your inner circle, can enhance your experience on Roblox.
It’s also important for older users to have the ability to speak with each other naturally.
Adding trusted friends allows our older users to have more freedom and our younger users to play with their parents and siblings.
To add a trusted friend, both users must complete a secure age check. Then, the process depends on the youngest user’s age.
Age-checked parents who have linked their account to their child’s and have added their child as a friend will automatically become a trusted friend.
Users age 9-12
For users ages 9-12, parents have to approve any requests to become a trusted friend.
Users can request to add someone as a trusted friend with the following steps:
- Navigate to the friend's profile and tap the three-dot menu.
- Select Add trusted friend.
- Select Add
- Select Ask now to request your parent’s permission (if you haven’t linked a parent to your account, enter your parent’s email and select Send email).
- If your parent approves, the request is sent to your friend:
- If they are under 13: Their parent must also approve the request.
- If they are 13 or older: They can accept the request directly.
Users 13-15
Teens can add each other as trusted friends in a couple of ways
- Live QR scan: Pull up your QR code in real life.
- Navigate to Home (mobile and desktop)
- Select the Add Friends (+) icon
- Select My QR
- Have your friend or family member use their phone camera (or the camera scanner by clicking the camera scanner icon on the upper right corner of the My QR page) and move it over the QR code.
Note: QR code scans only work in real life. If you or your friend scan a screenshot of the code, you will not be added as a trusted friend.
- Contact importer (Mobile): You can only add people directly from your phone’s contact list or accept requests from friends who added you from their phone’s contacts.
- Go to Home
- Select the Add Friends (+) icon.
- Choose Contacts.
- Select the friend you’d like to add as a trusted friend.
Users 16-17
Teen users ages 16-17 can also add trusted friends with their QR code and contact importer. They may also be able to add them through mutual opt-in.
Mutual opt-in: If both users fall into the 16-17 year old age group, they may be eligible to upgrade friends to trusted friends directly from their profile.
- Navigate to your friend’s profile
- Tap the three-dot menu
- Select Add trusted friend
- They will become a trusted friend if they accept your request via their notifications or on your profile from their account.
Please note that availability for this feature can vary between users.
Users 18+
Adults can add other age-checked adults using mutual opt in.
To ensure real-life familiarity with users 13-17 (younger siblings, family friends, school friends), they must use Contact importer and live QR code scanning.
To add a user under 13 (younger family member), users can click the three-dot menu on their profile and select Add Trusted Friend. Once your child tries to accept this request, it will trigger a request to the younger user’s parent.
There are a few different places you’ll be notified of your child’s request to add a trusted friend.
You will receive an email to review your child’s trusted friend request. Requests expire after 24 hours.
- New parent accounts
- If your account isn’t linked yet, the email will provide options to select Create account or Use existing account.
- Choose whichever applies.
- Create an account and follow these steps to link it to your child’s.
- Choose an existing account and link your account to your child’s.
- After your parent account (linked to your child’s) is set up, select Allow or Don’t Allow to approve or deny the request.
- Linked parent accounts
- Select Review in the request email to open the request in Roblox.
- Select Allow or Don’t Allow to approve or deny the request.
Parental Controls
If you have a linked parent account, you will see a pending request in your Parental Controls.
- Navigate to Pending requests in your settings to see any trusted friend requests.
- Select Allow or Don’t Allow to approve or deny the request.
Review and manage your child’s trusted friends via friends > trusted filter.
Users have full control over your trusted friends and can change or report them at any time.
- To downgrade: Tap Remove trusted friend from their profile menu to return them to a regular friend status.
- To Remove this user completely: Tap Remove friend to remove them from your list entirely.
- Reporting: Standard violation reporting applies to all users. You can report a trusted friend at any time, just like a regular friend.
Note: Parents are not able to remove a trusted friend or friend from their child’s account once they have been added. If there is someone that you do not wish your child to interact with any longer, you should block that user.
Advertisements on Roblox
There are three factors that qualify something as an ad on Roblox.
- If a brand or game creator uses one of our official ad formats to promote their brand or game on the platform.
- If a game creator receives any form of compensation in exchange for publishing content that features or promotes a 3rd-party brand.
- If a brand or game creator promotes any off-platform services or products.
Not all content that features a brand on Roblox is an ad. For example, a brand may have an experience purely for entertainment purposes (i.e. a fun game). If it does not promote any off-platform services or products, then it would not need to be labelled as an ad.
Ads on Roblox for U13 are similar to other platforms and TV networks worldwide that show age-appropriate advertising to children.
Brands are embedded in everyday life across all ages - both on platform and off of it. To ensure we’re serving content that is relevant, age-appropriate, and safe, we’ve implemented processes and strict regulations to ensure all ads are moderated, labelled clearly, and preserve users’ privacy.
Ensuring content can be labelled as an ad can be a positive. It enables users to clearly understand why a brand may be appearing within an experience and report it if they feel it is irrelevant or spammy.
No, we only allow nonpersonalized, age-appropriate, and clearly labeled content for those under 18. Our ads to U13 users are COPPA compliant.
Our framework ensures that every brand encounter on Roblox meets an industry-leading bar for transparency.
Moments
Moments is a way users can discover new games to play. Users can share and watch exciting gameplay clips from friends and influencers and jump straight into the game with a single tap. Currently, Moments is only available in some regions. In most of those regions, it is only available to age-checked users ages 16+ years old. Not all regions have influencer content available.
All content published in Moments is moderated. Just like content across Roblox, users can easily report any inappropriate content in Moments.
Roblox Moments is only available in select regions at this time. In most regions, it is only available to age-checked users ages 16+ years old.
